just pre-commit (and follow through) on "after the prediction has already been made i will [observe apparently random event] and base my boxing decision on the outcome". who cares about money in the boxes? we can pry at the foundations of understanding of the world we live in

the only morally righteous thing to do in a newcomb-like perfect predictor situation is to ignore the payoff matrix and use the whole setup as a scientific apparatus. try and force the predictor to predict e.g. quantum randomness. if the universe admits a perfect predictor of that that's useful data

The empiricism apple has had its immediately sensible qualities abstracted away, and is presented as a geometrical and algebraic idealization, and friend, that is rationalism.

"And—shattered on the roof like smallest snows" scans as perfect iambic pentameter but hardly sounds like that should be possible, just a metrically brilliant line

it's pretty good but man there is nothing like a tour of pre-1830s american poetry to make you really understand emerson's complaints about the sad state of american poetry in "the american scholar"

real name requirements considered harmful

in the early 2000s, due to concerns about online (mis/dis)information, and after online bullying led to actor choi jin-sil's death by suicide , south korea implemented a real name system it did not work. - it was used by conservatives to crack down on critics - mis/disinfo did not lessen (cont)

As more of our social, cultural and economic lives are mediated by the internet, prohibiting teenagers from accessing the internet is just preventing them from accessing social life. You're not helping them lead "healthier" lives, you're putting them in solitary confinement.

the fact that few surgeries are done on trans minors is not an inherent state of the world; it is a byproduct of a cultural regime where we are viewed as subhuman freaks whose healthcare is at best a luxury, at worst mutilation. in a just world, there would be vastly more of it

people asked by the chancellors of Vandy and WUSTL to draft a report about the politicization of the humanities will post anything. "Postmodernism is the main threat facing the humanities." No it isn't. That isn't true.
