It is darkly funny that American universities are for the most part elite research institutions yet for 90% of them their highest paid employees are football coaches. (And given that most of them are "state Us", that means the highest paid public employees in most states are coaches.)

I've always been curious about pursuing a trade, but one thing that leaves me feeling uncomfortable about moments like this one are how as a society we love to reward people only when we need them, then too often we ignore or fail them once we believe that need has stabilized. Boom. Bust. Repeat.
