Every so often my opinion on worldbuilding is vindicated by its own largest communities online If you are writing a narrative, a linear story or set of stories, heavy worldbuilding is Sugar of Lead: it tastes sweet, but it poisons you bit by bit if you don't understand what you're working with.

Almost every writer I’ve ever met who’s trapped in worldbuilding is doing it because they’re afraid. Usually, at the end of the day, the thing they’re afraid of is that you can actually fail at writing, but you can’t fail at prewriting. But that’s the exact reason not to do it.

my experience as a teen writer was to get heavily bogged down in worldbuilding (which was mainly inspired by non-prose sources i.e. video game sandbox RPGs) to the point where my actual writing and reading both became anemic. it's like taking a wrong turn into a cul-de-sac.

discovered that the root cause of this behaviour was that the game's berry club gives you a reward for planting 100 berries. that reward is... a shiny charm! shiny hunting is always the culprit

small addendum to this: it's fine to play video games like a weirdo but you have to be self-aware that you are being a weirdo and your behaviour is outside the scope of the implementation

sometimes i see the way people play a video game and i have the same horrified reaction as entering a room and seeing a baby playing with a pair of scissors. like WHY are you doing THAT oh my god you are a danger to yourself

saw someone in a romhack discord get irate and ruin their experience over a bug where the hack's sleep/time-passing function is bugged so berries do not grow if sleep is spammed under certain conditions, but imo the root cause of the poor player experience is the player behaviour and not the bug
