One way to beat the winter blues is to go egg hunting, with 4 of our 5 hairstreaks overwintering in this stage (Green Hairstreak overwinters as a pupa). This week will see me looking for Purple Hairstreak eggs that are usually found at the base of plump oak buds on south-facing, woodland edge trees.
