Common take I see re: rules of normative artistic technique is "you have to know the rules in order to know how break them" which I think is putting the cart before the horse. You don't need to know the RULES, you need to understand the underlying mechanics that the rules are simplifying.

I think "knowing the rules" can actually be detrimental to this. Take for example Chekhov's Gun, the principle whereby irrelevant narrative elements should be excised ("if you show a loaded gun in the first act, it should go off in the third")

It's a useful rule of thumb for telling a particular kind of normative story, but it by itself doesn't actually improve your skill at crafting stories. However, if you engage with it critically, you can get at the underlying mechanics, which are much more useful:

when you show things to the audience, the audience develops expectations about those things. If you show them a gun being loaded, they expect it to go off. You can play into those expectations or you can subvert them, that's up to you, but it's USEFUL to know that they exist no matter what.

The idea of "you have to know the rules before you can break them" is in my opinion often extrapolated into a general view of art whereby conventional art is easier to make good and unconventional art is harder to make good,

because the idea is that the convention is good by default whereas the subversion is bad by default and requires particular skill to MAKE it good. This is simply not true, we get truckloads of bad conventional art every week. Quality is orthogonal to convention.

When you take this idea to its extremes you get MauLer, enshrining the convention as the first pinnacle to which all artists must strive until they have fully mastered it and produced Objectively Good Art, at which point they are afforded the privilege of making further work which defies convention.

The rule by itself isn't useful, the mechanisms underlying it are. When you're told a rule, you shouldn't just follow it until you get good enough to question it "the right way," you should question it immediately, ask what it's really saying, and dig into the implications and pitfalls.
