Google has just released its June/July 2025 Core algorithm update. Fluctuations in visibility, clicks and impressions may not be a result of this update but rather the ongoing turbulence caused by Google AI Mode, LLMs and changes in the search‐results presentation.

The current state of SEO.

Spent the weekend using AI to plan a family holiday. Ended up with phantom direct flights, a kids club that didn’t exist, and points redeemable on a website that also didn’t exist. Happy travels!

I preferred the discussions on subdomains versus subfolders.

You can get good SEO results and not care about embeddings. It’s an interesting lens to see your content through, but it’s not some magic bullet future of SEO thing. The industry likes talking about it so much because it makes us seem very clever and technical.

The environmental cost of inference by hammering LLMs with thousands of terms to try and gauge brand visibility maddenly outweighs the value gleaned from it in my opinion. There is a whole industry spinning up to do this right now and it makes me a bit sad.

Just realised it’s been five years since I unexpectedly achieved one of my career highlights.

Some of the wealthiest people I know who made their money from SEO weren’t SEOs. They don’t sit on Twitter, engage with SEO threads on LinkedIn, or attend conferences. They were simply excellent at monetising traffic, building commercial relationships, and focusing on execution.

The newest and most powerful A.I. technologies — so-called reasoning systems from companies like OpenAI, Google and the Chinese start-up DeepSeek — are generating more errors, not fewer. As their math skills have notably improved, their handle on facts has gotten shakier.
