I used @tryprofound to check ChatGPT citations going to Reddit.com across various big brands - most of them show the same patterns shown by @promptwatchcom Big drop-off on September 10/11 - about 1/3 of the number of citations from prior weeks.

I noticed a lot of top-cited URLs in AI search are pages that would otherwise drive little to no SEO visibility on Google (spammy/low quality/hit by algorithm updates)

This is so bad - I asked @perplexityai.bsky.social about recent SEO/AI news and it responded with an information about a non-existent, made-up algorithm update. 🧵

I've been wondering this whole time why Google allowed ChatGPT to scrape its results...

Makes sense that impressions are dropping dramatically after Google disabled the num=100 parameter. We saw impressions spike for many clients throughout the year, and a lot of evidence that much of it came from new LLM tracking tools.

Something I've noticed about LLM citations: they aren't so great at consistently citing the *original* version of an article, when re-writes and summaries exist on other URLs. Even when the other articles are AI-generated summaries. Sorta like Google 😅 Hopefully they get better at this over time!

AI Mode is starting to look like AI Overviews.

A lot of people are making claims about the sites/pages mentioned in ChatGPT without noting that OpenAI has deals with many of the cited publishers. Always worth asking if the cited publisher is owned by one of the media companies partnering with OpenAI. Here is a list, for reference:

So there’s a YouTube account I often turn on as “background” video, with drone footage of major cities, beautiful landscapes, national parks, etc. Now their account is blasting out AI videos of nonexistent places and it sucks. The whole point is to marvel at the actual planet.

So tired of reading this crap. Almost every article I read about SEO being "dead" because the "landscape has totally changed with AI search" then goes on to present a bunch of obvious, foundational SEO tactics as if they are new.

Pro tip: if you are creating filters in Google Search Console to track branded impressions/clicks... you might also want to exclude the word "evaluate" 😅

Just used ChatGPT to find the best brand/ecommerce store for a product I’m looking for, then went to Google to find their online store. As I have many times. And I imagine thousands of people do this same thing every day. 🧵
