I'm a huge fan of urban fantasy. It's my comfort genre, but I've also been fascinated at the ways it's developed and mutated over the decades. Getting to discuss this with @sskorkowsky.bsky.social, who is even more immersed in the genre than I am, was an absolute delight.

Essential? General speaking, no. Do some games require or benefit from backgrounds? Yes. Are backgrounds unessential for or hinder some games. Of course. Like most things in this hobby, there are no correct answers, there are just opinions, and you decide which ones work best for you and your game.

Had a great first session of Dark Passages (GURPS Horror) today. I’m playing an antiquarian and dealer in rare texts in 1866 New Orleans. A polite gentleman who restores manuscripts, verifies provenance, and absolutely does not forge documents or steals questionable tomes from private libraries. 😉

This is a philosophy I live by and it quite literally defines every memorable game and group I’ve been a part of. Turns out a lot of great games live on the other side of, “Hmm, I don’t know,” and then, “Sure, let’s give it a go.”

Revisiting The Dresden Files on audiobook this time around and James Marsters is a solid narrator so far, but good lord, did no one tell him to step back a skosh from the mic? It sounds like he swallowed a Blue Yeti and every hard gulp, wet smack, and dry exhale is coming through loud and clear.

I’ve already done this month’s ago, so let’s make it more interesting. 1 like = 1 item from my TTRPG library that is rare, obscure, weird, or odd and comes with story about it.

Tonight’s DCC Caverns of Thracia: The fight with the cult leaders was looking grim. Time to Spellburn. My imp familiar stripped me bare and carved flaming runes across my skin. As they ignited, my magic missile erupted into a storm of meteors. Needless to say, their advantage was tempered. 😅

It never ceases to surprise me how few TTRPG conventions there are in Southern California beyond Strategicon, especially for a region this big, and even Strategicon has its own issue with how little publisher presence there tends to be.

Today we said goodbye to the Reikland and the Empire as we successfully concluded The Enemy Within after more than four years of traversing the Imperial realms. Bittersweet, but it was a grand adventure like no other. And it’s safe to assume we’ve stopped the encroachment of Chaos…indefinitely. 😉

So of course a Deep One hybrid escapes from a desert detention camp years after the raid on Innsmouth, eventually making his way to Vegas where he opens a small off strip casino. The real question is, does he name it the dignified Devil’s Reef Lounge or go full Vegas and call it Slots-O-Nomicon?🤔😏

Horror runs on fear, and fear runs on loss. Loss of control, life, identity, and so on. If nothing can be taken from the characters in the name of preserving agency, dread disappears. What remains is not horror, just danger.
