A good day of work doing set visits today, and then back to the house to make mushroom risotto for dinner, which my cousin pronounced delicious. It’s the little things.

In furthering my aim to be useful to my cousin, I made roasted chicken thighs with cannellini beans and grape tomatoes for dinner, and collected all the garbage/recycling and put it on the curb for tomorrow’s collection day. Just trying to make things that little bit easier in the midst of grief.

In my quest to be useful I am cooking up random bits from the fridge/cupboards, my weekly vegetable box, and groceries purchased in the last couple of days, trying to turn them into meals. This evening: mini sweet peppers stuffed with a mixture of ground pork, rice, tomato sauce and cheese. 🍽️🍜

Two weeks ago I sat in the sun room of my aunt’s house listening to my dad and his sisters talk and reminisce. I knew it could be the last time they were all together, and it was. Grateful to have been there, and missing my aunt something terrible this morning.

Turning ingredients in the fridge into food today, just trying to be useful to my cousin as we grieve her mom’s passing.

I beseech you: if you don’t have a will, make one. If you do have a will, MAKE SURE PEOPLE KNOW WHERE IT IS.

One of my favourite people, my beloved aunt, has left us. A quietly spectacular woman, I will miss her desperately. Everything you like about me, I learned from her. I am bereft.

Literally the only time I hear a car alarm these days is when I’m on BC Ferries. (Related: I am on a ferry.)

Like everyone else I had a sourdough starter in the everyone-stay-home-covid-times, but I never really mastered making delicious bread from it. A few weeks ago I bought "The Sourdough Bible" and have built up my starter, and just now my first round loaf has gone into the oven. Fingers crossed! 🍽️🍲🍞

I cannot express how amazing my dad and his sisters are. The conversation is fascinating and wide-ranging, and includes references to and snippets of poetry, history, philosophy, current events, etc, tied back to the stories they tell of their shared childhood on a ranch in 1940s Saskatchewan. 😍

Do not underestimate the soft spoken, the kind, the gentle. It takes strength to be those things, sometimes more than you will ever know. If you look closely at someone who conducts themselves honorably, you will find something fierce inside.
