Very cool idea to view research studies as opportunities for science communication! A more thoughtful approach to debriefing and other aspects of research might help the public better understand how science works and why it is valuable.

Submitted an R01 yesterday with a colleague. I spent 70 hrs on it & I bet she spent as much time or more. =140 hrs of faculty time. I'm not even complaining! If we are lucky enough to get this, it's a lot of $ and responsibility. But the grant churn can be grueling.

If I were a blue state governor, I’d be looking into adding a bunch of tenure lines at my state schools. I know that seems like “kick ‘em when they’re down,” but it’s more like “let academics who can escape to where they can do real work.” Builds up your own schools AND protect US academic output.

One question on my mind is whether fellowships will now allow BESH-type studies. For a bit pretty much any "learning" or "training" study was out of bounds for F31s/F32s b/c they were classified as clinical trials.

This is good news for NIH-funded behavioral scientists and for the public; it resolves an unfortunate Catch-22 situation that inflated administrative burden and occasionally excluded basic behavioral science from funding opportunities:

We could have 4 JWST’s or a science mission at every planet. The NIH could be funded for two years. Or 1.5 years or so of USAID funding, if it still existed. This is how they’re spending our tax dollars. This is our money.
