This whole thread is gold but this might be the most common PhD app error: an applicant wants to work on a topic that’s not part of my expertise. Applicants might be surprised at how specialized researchers are. I wouldn’t be able to supervise a dissertation on child lang in my lab, for instance.

Is The Sandwich Assault going to show up in Psych textbooks next to the Loftus "crashed==broken glass" false memory studies? If a sandwich was described as "forcibly flung", does it make it more likely you will remember a mustard and onion explosion?
