Every 'paper candidate' elected as a councillor who turns out to be ineligible, gets binned, or runs away when they realise the work involved, presumably triggers a by-election which is going to cost that local authority serious money. Nigel Farage, whose party recently put a teenager with zero work experience of any kind, in charge of running an entire county, is currently giving a speech railing against "unqualified" politicians being put in charge of Government departments

With London's election results coming so close in places, I had a look at three random councils - in 82% of cases the candidate whose surname appeared highest on the ballot paper outperformed the party colleague who was alphabetically lowest. May have caused some split results.

And this is exactly the sort of vote-profile that suggests that some form of #AV / #PR should now be introduced into British politics. FPTP is a redundant voting format. AV would mean a shift toward well-argued, fully-explored policies that benefit the country. Add mandated-voting for all over 16.
