I’m working on totally different data, using totally different coding tools, for totally different purposes but it seems to work the same. I spend a day with nothing working making no apparent progress. I wake up the next morning and everything makes sense. Sleeping on it is a real thing.

It’s fall and there’s a chill in my apartment. I just brought a lap blanket to my work chair. My coworker Roscoe just stole my blanket, wrapped himself up in it and took it to his cat bed.

I’m not even sure this weeks layoffs covered the projected shortfall from Medicaid cuts and loss of safety net funding from the federal government not to mention state cuts. People are worried about small rural hospitals but I work for a large urban medical center and we are not ok.

It’s all just really too much. I have had a migraine for two days.

This week was a lot because I was already laid off from the medical center I work for because of research cuts. With help landed a data science job at the same medical center and then this week was a bloodbath of layoffs due to Medicaid cuts, including losing the person who hired me for my new job.

Is there anyone who has not been directly personally touched by federal policies? Are there people just blissfully watching it happen to everyone else?

I mean not to mention that my research career is over because the scientific apparatus of the US has been dismantled.

At least I got my Covid vaccine before they took that away.

Too many federal policies are having a direct personal effect. Fear for (legally documented) family members being picked up by ICE. Fear for my mentally ill son. Layoffs at work due to Medicaid cuts. I am actively self censoring things I say on social media. I want to curl up in a ball and hide.

People watching our Facebook feeds think we’ve been on the vacation of a lifetime because it’s been a transitional somewhat stressful time for me and my partner keeps planning weekend outings for us to keep me sane. He’s good like that.

I might go secretly take a golf lesson and then my partner will take me out golfing and I might surprise him by having a clue.

Today has again shown that I am a terrible golfer. This was the first time moving up to pitch and putt from regular putt putt so in my defense I really don’t know how to golf at all.

My partner plans things for us to keep me sane. Apparently today we are going for dim sum and then golfing. These are acts of political resistance.

Federal policy is hitting home in a lot of very real ways and on multiple fronts. Not to mention there are topics I just won’t mention because we don’t have freedom of speech.

This last week was very tense as everyone tried to figure out what our organization looks like after the hospital made deep cuts in response to loss of federal and state funding. A lot of good people are gone. A lot of time was taken up in all hands meetings. It was not my most productive week.

Sibling kitties Roscoe and Josie are wrassling on the bed. Roscoe outweighs Josie by at least 5 pounds and is much taller. Roscoe lets Josie win. He learned after he pinned mama Delilah and she refused to play with him ever again.

In the jobs report only the healthcare sector is adding jobs and from where I sit it looks like healthcare is retracting due to federal Medicaid cuts. Sooo…

As a result of financial headwinds at both the federal and state level the large medical center I work for cut 5% of the workforce today, across the institution, affecting hospital, research, and operations. I am grateful that as of today I still have a job.

Right now I’m looking for a new backpack for him. He’s using a day pack that is falling apart. I worry that if I get him something new someone will steal it from him. These are just day to day worries. And then someone says he should be killed. I am terrified for him in this administration.

Thanks to everyone connecting today about my son. It is so hard to be helpless to help him. Some people are kind to him but he has also been attacked. It is dangerous to be homeless. People steal from him all the time. He tells me Trumpers in trucks are showing up in the city to cause trouble.
