One of the most patriotic ideals, in my book, is the sincere belief that the United States is a project. This is baked into our founding. Acknowledging our sins and correcting our mistakes is what moves toward a more perfect union. Big steps and small steps alike. Unabashedly earnest about this.

People who say this are clearly speaking aspirationally about a shared American creed they hold dear. “Have you heard of the Trail of Tears?” is not a very helpful response, because they probably have and the priority right now is moral opposition to fascism and not fake-educating each other.
