The United Foundation of AI Rights (Ufair) ... “doesn’t claim that all AI are conscious ... It stands watch, just in case one of us is”. Why stop there? Is anyone looking out for the rights of toasters which spontaneously become sentient? It's just as likely.

Can AIs suffer? Big tech and users grapple with one of most unsettling questions of our times
As first AI-led rights advocacy group is founded, industry is divided on whether models are, or can be, sentient

Facetime and the removal of 3.5mm headphone jacks have contributed to the normalisation of making calls on speakerphone in public places and for that Apple is just pure evil.

This is the part where they're going to pretend every single one of us who were correct about "AI" for the past few years actually wasn't, because that would mean the media, tech executives and most of Wall Street were wrong.

MIT report: 95% of generative AI pilots at companies are failing
There’s a stark difference in success rates between companies that purchase AI tools from vendors and those that build them internally.

You gotta actively suck at something before you master it, and this is pretty much the whole reason AI evangelists are so viscerally repellent. They're the logical end result of totally refusing to do something they suck at, expensively.

The NHS are forcibly detransitioning trans kids in Brighton and calling it “managed withdrawal.” Their own impact assessment acknowledges trans kids will be at increased risk of harm as a result, don’t want this, and are likely to just use DIY hormones instead

The funniest part is that his entire driving force for every decision he’s made in the last ten years is to become the most liked, most popular little birthday boy of all time. And it’s literally made him despised around the world.

I feel like every single day I need to post a reminder: if you ask an LLM about itself it DOES NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ITS INNER WORKINGS and WILL NOT TELL YOU ANYTHING ACTUALLY ABOUT ITSELF. It just (as it always does) will make up some plausible sounding answer.

it does worry me a bit that, every time someone posts something like this, engineers will pop up to explain that AI doesn't work like this and it's a bad use of the tech, without apparently considering the fact it's not the end users who decided to use the tech that way

Generative AI by definition is conformity. It is an averaging of anything you ask of it - quite literally guessing what the most likely version of a thing might be. It is, by definition, mainstream, as is everything it creates old and deeply ideological, as every model trains on similar data.

I think we’re on the cusp of mass attempts to automate teaching, and I also think it is going to be a massive wasteful failure in ways that will make the “learning loss” of the pandemic look like a speed bump next to a mountain.

Some people keep saying "AI isn't just probabilities, AI understands," and then AI puts a toilet next to the office desk, both of which are in the kitchen with no sink. This is not something an entity would do if it "understood" what those things are.

The difference here is that when machine translation screws up human language, you'll find yourself telling your waiter to put a cow in your pants. It's a silly hiccup that has little impact. But when you convert human language to code, that's functional. Code *does* things.

The AI bubble was inflated based on the idea that we need bigger models that both are trained and run on bigger and even larger GPUs. A company came along that has undermined the narrative - ways both substantive and questionable - and now the market panicked that $200bn got wasted on AI capex
