Agreed! To extend- I’m also trying to make explicit and visible my literacies with my pre-service teachers. Highlighting all the ways that literacies count in and outside the classroom

A5: I really hope we can share more about what #literacies we engage in or have engaged in in our classroom teaching! As a current HS teacher, I’m always looking to make what I’m more engaging with my students. How have we brought together theory and practice ourselves? I'm so curious!

A3: As part of the GSB, I feel like I’ve made a lot of connections with others and have been privileged to help be part of making these chats happen! Everyone who has been part of these has been me grow and think and learn. #literacies Particularly current and former GSB members!

Reading this question, I couldn’t help but think of the the emphasis political operatives and think tanks place on “parental rights” and “parental choice.” This ideology is evident in arguments for school vouchers as well as efforts to remove books from libraries and classrooms.

Self-censorship is such a challenging reality for K-12 teachers in this moment. Ginsberg & Chae have a great piece on it in Vol 1 of Impacts of Censorship #literacies

A2: I read the book All American Boys with a class of tenth graders in 2020. I had a parent who was adamant that the book would make his son feel bad about being White. It was a whole thing before ever reaching me. Interestingly, he backed off after an eventual phone call with me! #literacies

Governmental restrictions to restrict speech based on ideological reasoning, and public schools count as government. In those school contexts, censorship often ignores the training, experience, and professionalism of teachers. Leaders override their informed text selections. #literacies

A1: Censorship is an effort to take away access to information. Readings from critical #literacies theorists largely inform my definition and so does my own teaching. I’ve experienced attempts at book bans/challenges in my school, but thankfully I’ve had support from those around me to prevent it.

A4: Consider interdisciplinary project where you students learn ideas and concepts within ELA and then invite your colleagues to offer ways you could reinforce math learning in YOUR lesson. They will find the connection, and BOOM- Got em. #literacies

A5: I love a human barometer where students are allowed to change their minds. So if I give the statement “all political leaders work toward the benefit of all citizens” & someone agrees but another viscerally disagrees, we discuss & Ss are allowed to move. There’s space to learn & grow #literacies

A4: This is a great question!!! As someone who has really only teaches ELA and taught ELA & SS preservice teachers, I’m eager to hear people’s answers to this one. #literacies

A3: Indeed. Racial literacies is an intentional process where seeking more perspectives and views serve us to grow our own thinking. Thank you for that. #literacies

A3: I think racial #literacies embodies the inclusion of diversity & equity in the texts that we encounter. As a HS, this means that I try to reflect the identities of my majority Hispanic population in our readings and also the identities of people we don’t typically encounter in our school texts.

A2: I think intersectionality is WHY we should look at race in isolation. E.g., as a white person, I’m not oppressed because of my race, whereas someone who is Black in our society is. It's absolutely necessary that I understand my place as an ally in those discussions & not as a victim. #literacies

A1: With race, racism, and wellbeing, I try to focus on what I can influence: Uplifting cultural events in my community, reading culturally relevant texts in my classroom, and also just being a good ally in general to people of color, which can include many many things! #literacies

It is too real. I read about teachers in other times and places—teaching enslaved Black people to read, teaching critical #literacies in apartheid South Africa—who were forced to make decisions between their livelihoods and what was good/right for their students.
