While growing up, I'd always been frustrated by my inability to draw or paint. Even as an adult, despite having an eye for photography and other mediums, I still had an ingrained belief I couldn't *do* art. So in April I decided to give it a go. Nine months of #birdwhisperer later:

The only reasonable position is zero tolerance: the AI industry must end sooner rather than later. It is culturally, socially, environmentally, and economically destructive, and all the Silicon Valley marketing in the world isn't going to make it otherwise.

During the writing of this essay, I fundamentally changed my entire stance on the topic during the course of both the research and the writing of it. If I had decided to opt-out of any part of that process, it would have been a much weaker piece, and one I wouldn't feel so proud of today.

I often stop a painting partway bc something feels off in the execution. I pull it apart, put it back together again and the end result is so much better, more focused on the original goal for it. That's part of the process. If I skip that part, the results are less polished, and less meaningful.

We spoke to a dozen professional concept artists who are currently or have previously worked in game development about whether generative AI image tools have made their jobs any easier. Zero said it did. Most said it made things harder. thisweekinvideogames.com/feature/conc...

This has been a massive undertaking since I started this project back in April 2024. In total, I took 3691 photos of this beautiful, horrific world, and edited and curated them into 18 albums of my journey through the Lands Between and the Land of Shadow.

This! Struggling (however little) means I am constantly learning, reinforcing neural pathways, finding new patterns. I’m also committing the codebase to my brain so I can think through it holistically and improve things. The chatbot can’t do that BECAUSE IT DOES NOT UNDERSTAND SEMANTICS

I've recently been thinking about the different ways I engage with games in the post-game. Outer Wilds, I revisit through the lens of watching other people discover its mysteries. Elden Ring, I re-immerse myself through photography, mapping my wanderings into a form of travelogue.

I've spent the past couple of weeks casually speedrunning Silksong on the Switch, and today's run came to 2h2m2s, knocking a full hour off my previous personal best. Definitely plenty of room left for improvement, but if I can get it below 1h45m I'll be delighted!
