in the UK, "dignity and respect" is a phrase which means "as much cruelty as we can get away with"

Aside from being obnoxious & cruel, this will create bad data, especially for hate crimes.

A catastrophically bad decision, and Kevin explains why very clearly here. It is in fact likely to undermine data accuracy and undermine the ability to police effectively.

Mandating a binary, immutable definition of sex in research is epistemic vandalism. It doesn’t just erase trans people, it wreaks havoc on the tools of knowledge production, leading to less nuanced, less accurate, and less rigorous science.
