I’m horrified by Trump’s order to send 300 National Guard troops to Chicago. We’re only nine months into a four year term and already the president is trying to invade an American city. If you’re in the Guard, you can and should refuse these orders.

My message to Kristi Noem is clear: Get out of Chicago.

This is the best possible outcome under current circumstances for the state. OR, though, has certain advantages over IL: because ICE activity has been far less aggressive (so far) there than in IL, the protests are smaller and more easily contained. They also have LE officers trained in this work.

One thing to watch for: if ICE aggressively ramps up its enforcement ops in Portland, as they have in IL/Chicago. If so, they might be trying to escalate the situation as discussed earlier. (Not defending/condemning any individual acts by LE anywhere, BTW. Just talking about states’ responses.)

This is very relevant to the discussion yesterday about what the IL State Police and local police might be trying to do in Broadview IL and across Chicago. The judgement describes how OR officials and state police dealt with protests at the ICE facility in Portland. TLDR: very effectively.
