a lot of tech-press AI coverage, from both boosters and skeptics, is extremely US-centric compared to the adoption of AI elsewhere in the world - which by most measures outpaces the US, by some measures wildly. good to see some reporting that isn't

the AI em-dash discourse is amusing to me because 15 years ago half the editors in the world were complaining about how they were a sign of lazy, gnarly writing. it was a whole discourse cycle in 2011!

I'm paywalled out of this so I can't read it. But if the main argument isn't "music criticism does not pay nearly enough to justify the endless heckling, doxing and harassment to which fan hives subject critics who even mildly criticize their favorites" then I'm skeptical

this is unfortunately one of the symptoms of an under-resourced media ecosystem. it's exceedingly rare to have fact-checkers these days, but even having a copy desk (or editor who checks the names of people mentioned) could have helped catch these fabrications

Feels like this quote conveys so much about our contemporary condition, in a nutshell: "[Wojnarowicz's art] does not go with the aesthetic or the design for the gym, so we were in a bad place. Having a mural of this nature just didn’t go with the health and fitness vibe."

the idea, by the way, was that AI adoption sometimes functions as a kind of “tracer dye”: it can reveal the places in institutions and structures where things have already broken down and a bad “fix” is being used for an actual problem it can’t solve but that still needs to be fixed
