It is a good thing that the Home Office will no longer have the power to accommodate unaccompanied young people - being a corporate parent is one of the most important roles the state can take on and it is vital that it is done by those with expertise on the responsibility it entails.

FWIW, I wrote a long piece for the FT’s Weekend magazine in 2021 about this: on.ft.com/3v5GW6H It explains how people end up as unauthorised immigrants. In many cases, they just can’t afford the very high fees for the UK’s very short-validity visas.
