Home Office FOI fun: FOI request made on 12 February 2025. FOI response received on 22 May 2026. Response says that data for FOI response was extracted on 6 March 2025. Response answers the FOI, but obviously is now completely irrelevant.

As expected, the immigration stats show that the asylum backlog is now down to to 35,744 cases, which is just under 49,000 people. Lowest since pre-covid. And there were 20,855 people in hotels at the end of March - which is down a third since the time of the election.

Hotel numbers will be down, so to the asylum backlog. 12 month channel crossings numbers will be slightly up, but the year-to-date crossings are 40% down on this time last year

Not sure this is a huge surprise, but would be good to be accurate about what’s being backed. It’s not just that they “double the length of time it takes for some people to achieve settled status from five years to 10” - for most people it will start at 15 years. For most refugees, it’s 20 years.

There will be an immigration bill in today’s King’s Speech, but would be very surprised is there was anything on earned settlement in it. Almost certainly will cover the replacement of the tribunal with a new asylum appeals body, something on article 8 and potentially asylum support changes.

Also: Can you delay it? Technically yes, by extending prorogation. But that would delay Parliament resuming and would probably look worse than the awks of having it. Plus, for how long? A whole leadership contest?? No that wouldn't work.

April 2026 is the second lowest post pandemic month* for people crossing the Mediterranean into the EU (mostly asylum seekers). Mainly small boat crossings but also by land from Turkey. *March 2022 was lower. However, that was unusual for the time, now we’ve had 4 straight very low months.
