Had an idea that compresses two characters into one. Originally one was the only ally one of the "heroes" had and the other was someone with no true allegiance, but a commitment to doing his duty.

One of the best things about Fire Emblem is when you send your little anime guys to spear people in horrific war during the first part of the game and they go “tee hee I’m getting better!” when they level up and then you do the same thing in the second half and they go “war demeans humanity itself”

The wisdom of 'if you're blocked on a scene, that means there's probably an issue with an earlier scene' continues to hold true. On the bright side, picking things apart has given me insight on how to fix the chapter I was feeling wasn't doing enough.

Decided to start tracking what the leads are feeling about each other across scenes and its led to some rather amusing results.

No idea if I'm keeping it in this form in the final draft, but Adilet finally was forced to monologue about his motivations and be openly emotional, and it was fun writing him actually express himself.

Remembering the ancient ways

I know it's fine to repeat yourself and circle plot points on a first draft, but it never feels great when you can see yourself doing it. Alas, figuring out how to tighten what needs to be tightened and move things around is better saved when you can actually step back to see how all the pieces fit

I often think about Araki's description of the Midwest from his time here doing research for Steel Ball Run. I think he nailed it.

A lot of my writing process is giving a characters a road map, and then letting them take me on detours and make course corrections. Which means that editing before I reach the end is a fools errand because I never know for sure which detours are dead ends and which lead to new paths.

Was in the mood, so I made some schmoopy picrews of my two terrible OCs. They don't actually get this schmoopy for quite a while, since uh, they have a whole ton of stuff to work through. They do have a lot of sex, but it's pretty emotionally messy sex.

Having to fight myself on making a character's anger more palatable to maintain audience sympathy with him because he is 100% justified in being angry, but his anger is very much not the pretty kind.

Was waiting for my order at a coffee shop and song came on and I had the thought 'oh, a modern AU of [OC] would 100% belt this out in the shower.' And I'm pretty sure I ended up with a stupidly fond smile on my face because the barista gave me a weird look.

The thing I am not looking forward to in my editing is the logistical clarity part of this story for the parts that the characters know, but don't have reason to directly bring up, but the audience might want to understand to get a clear picture before there's a point where they can be mentioned.

This might be partially because of what I read, but off the top of my head She Who Became the Sun/He Who Drowned the World are really only (fiction) books that I can think of that deconstruct toxic masculinity while understanding what make it so damn seductive

The worst part of long form stories is that polishing scenes before a whole draft is done is not wise because you can't be sure what their final form needs to be until you're done with drafting. But sometimes you really want to polish anyhow.

Writing characters being mean is funny when you're a person who can't even pick mean dialogue options in video games. 'The character is behaving understandably here, but *I* still feel bad about it' is a funny kind of feeling.
