Had an idea that compresses two characters into one. Originally one was the only ally one of the "heroes" had and the other was someone with no true allegiance, but a commitment to doing his duty.

Decided to start tracking what the leads are feeling about each other across scenes and its led to some rather amusing results.

No idea if I'm keeping it in this form in the final draft, but Adilet finally was forced to monologue about his motivations and be openly emotional, and it was fun writing him actually express himself.

Remembering the ancient ways

I know it's fine to repeat yourself and circle plot points on a first draft, but it never feels great when you can see yourself doing it. Alas, figuring out how to tighten what needs to be tightened and move things around is better saved when you can actually step back to see how all the pieces fit

I often think about Araki's description of the Midwest from his time here doing research for Steel Ball Run. I think he nailed it.

A lot of my writing process is giving a characters a road map, and then letting them take me on detours and make course corrections. Which means that editing before I reach the end is a fools errand because I never know for sure which detours are dead ends and which lead to new paths.
