I'm enjoying Parable of the Sower (though I'm still chewing on my thoughts on how the book frames violence and poverty. I want to see if it's planning on saying anything about dehumanization or if that's an artifact of the 90's attitude towards crime.) BUT I do really want a lighter read after

RIP Bonnie Tyler. And RIP Tandi Iman Dupree. This remains the best stage entrance by a drag queen of all time, even some 25 years later, and the best use of Tylerโs โHolding Out for a Heroโ ever.

I decided to start reading Parable of the Sower and got to say, there's something eerie reading a book published the year I was born that takes place starting in 2024 in California. Not sure what to make of it yet, but it's compelling so far

Honestly, not even my strongest critique of this book, but author, if your setting is meant to be thinly veiled fantasy Russia... Why do the names not work like Russian names. Russian's don't have middle names, we have patronymics.

My other silly thought about Witch Hat Atlier is that it's been a while since I've seen a male character designed to be as fan service-y to a certain demographic as Qifrey. Very much the sad sort of twink you want to see bent over a table, leaking from his eye.

Sometimes, I'm like 'oh, I adore this character and how painfully messy she is' and I read a review that's like 'yeah, this character is really hard to like' and I can't help but laugh Anyway Witch Hat Atelier is great and Agott is amazing and I can't wait to watch her grow

Still trying to find a good popcorn read because it's honestly kinda wild to not be able to find one, and I'm starting to realize I've really taken things like 'subtext' and 'clever sentence construction' and 'evocative language' for granted. There is a startling amount of books that lack all three

The discourse around "This is a tell for AI writing" really only serves the AI bros, because (they believe) it will tell them how to change the AI to make it indistinguishable from a human. We need to keep our em dashes. Our rules of three. The tell for AI is: is it hollow, does it say nothing.

Like, F/F and M/F fiction have their own landmines, but man, the amount of completely unnecessary misogyny one stumbles on in M/M fiction is really something.

It's always a little disappointing when a story starts with characters in non-traditional relationships and then eventually decides that no, monogamous marriage, with regular vanilla sex and a child is actually what the characters need. Especially when one of those characters is aro/ace spec.

Had an idea that compresses two characters into one. Originally one was the only ally one of the "heroes" had and the other was someone with no true allegiance, but a commitment to doing his duty.

The wisdom of 'if you're blocked on a scene, that means there's probably an issue with an earlier scene' continues to hold true. On the bright side, picking things apart has given me insight on how to fix the chapter I was feeling wasn't doing enough.

Well, today I learned that sometimes what you need to do is flip the order of some scenes to motivate things better. Still need to work out how to make 'character is trying to gather info to formulate a plan and then discusses the info he gathered with his uh...co-conspirator' avoid repeating itself

I know it's fine to repeat yourself and circle plot points on a first draft, but it never feels great when you can see yourself doing it. Alas, figuring out how to tighten what needs to be tightened and move things around is better saved when you can actually step back to see how all the pieces fit

A lot of my writing process is giving a characters a road map, and then letting them take me on detours and make course corrections. Which means that editing before I reach the end is a fools errand because I never know for sure which detours are dead ends and which lead to new paths.
