30 September 1992. Sugar at The Leadmill, Sheffield. Insanely loud from start to finish but the ferocity and intensity builds until it peaks with Tilted and JC Auto. My ears were ringing for days afterwards.

Just saw Edwyn Collins@Buxton. Incredibly joyous and moving as I listen to the soundtrack of my last 45 years. Edwyn on feisty good form and the band were superb especially guitarist Patrick Ralla who also featured in impressive support The Hanging Stars. Will investigate on Bandcamp tomorrow.

Jane Weaver at the Float Along festival at The Foundry in Sheffield tonight. Shorter greatest hits set as second billing to Antony Szmierek. Jane is also poorly but you wouldn’t know. She is ace. AS is great fun. Imagine Alex Turner fronting Underworld. Lots of positive vibes and smiling faces.

26 September 1992. Moose at The Leadmill, Sheffield. Like watching two different bands on the same stage as they veered between the early effects laden singles and the hazy country tinged pop of “XYZ”. Luckily, I loved them both.

26/27 September 1981. The Bunnymen were flawless in 1981 but special mention to The Cramps who were great fun. The original Sunday bill was supposed to include Japan, Killing Joke and Tom Verlaine. Instead, GO4 headlined and Classic Nouveaux played for what seemed like a year. Absolute shithole.

25 September 1983. Crystal clear sound on the night so Andy Gills guitar sounds more jagged than usual. The songs from “Hard” especially “Silver Lining” are 100% more vital than their insipid studio versions. Third time seeing The Smiths and best yet, seems a fair few are there solely for them.

Just realised this is 40 years old this month. My favourite Husker Du album and “Makes No Sense At All” still makes my desert island discs. I played both sides of that 7” to death in 1985.

Looking forward to seeing these two next month. Superb album

15 September 1992. Spiritualized at The Leadmill, Sheffield. Midweek gig at a less than half full Leadmill. Loud. Some people sat on the floor for their performance which I remember vexed me. “Lazer Guided Melodies” plus assorted singles. Highlight was the recent “Medication”. Best time I saw them.

11/09/1982. An ice rink carpeted over for the occasion so numb feet for everyone. Listening back to the recording, out of tune vocals and bum notes abound but to this 16 year old NO were magnificent. Hearing “AOC” and “Leave me alone” for the first time and recognising them as immediate classics.

5&6 September 1981. My first festival, albeit indoors in a massive cow shed. Slept outside under bin liners handed out to us. Loads of great performances but The Sound stole the show. First encounter with Felt and I did not enjoy them. Lawrence on guitar and someone playing bongos as I recall.

Really enjoying this. Only listened initially as he’s playing with Jane Weaver at the end of the month. Toes have been tapped and shoulders occasionally dipped.

30 August 1992. Truth be told, however great Nirvana were that night, Teenage Fanclub were better.

Just arrived. First listen.

29 August 1993. Only saw New Order’s encore as was watching the magnificent Big Star headline the tent. Other highlights were Grant Lee Buffalo, The Breeders, The Boo Radleys and The Lemonheads. Saw the latter this week and wished I’d settled for the memory of this day in 1993.

25 August 1989. The Friday night is the best festival line up I’ve ever been to.

Sunday morning. Isn’t “Greensward Days”, with its lovely nod to Television, one of the best songs Mr Astor has written?

14 August 1984. The Go-Betweens. In my top 3 gigs. Four piece, stark lighting, they sounded on it and looked fantastic. Mainly songs from the imminent “Spring Hill Fair” and “Before Hollywood”. I recorded it but have never seen any pictures. No support but the film “The Heiress” showed beforehand.

7 August 1988. Clear stand outs were The House of Love who were on fire live at this point and the all new supercharged MBV.

4 August 1984. Patchy line up but The Fall were on gnarly top form in their shortened set and The Damned good fun live. Also met legendary purveyor of live bootleg tapes Eddie Wollfram who had a stall there on the day.

What a great live band they were.

On this day 31 July 1982. Overcast and blustery but worth the long trip up north, especially for Gang of 4 and The Beat who get everyone moving. U2 get the best reaction of the day and The Police remind me why I had been a fan of the first two albums. Surprisingly, given the location, not sold out.

On this day 23 July 1986. Spent the day on a factory floor being force fed another Royal Wedding on a tv the management “allowed” us to bring in. Then on the train for this. I will die on my hill proclaiming that The Servants were the best band (not the best song) on C86. pic by Birmingham 81.

On this day, part two. 18 July 1992. Pavement supported by Belly at The Leadmill. Newly arrived in Sheffield and the first of many memorable nights here. Original drummer Gary Young was outside handing out dried spaghetti to the audience queueing to get in.
