20 November 1994 - Gene@The Leadmill, Sheffield A fan of the early run of singles especially “Olympian” and they were a surprisingly robust live act. Fairly sure Justine Frischmann was stood directly behind me and yakked to her friend throughout. If it was you, Justine, bad form!

1981. This was great fun at 15. Virtually all of the singles up to that point plus the best of their previous two albums. Support was the abysmal Anti- Nowhere League.

The Smiths 16 November 1983 - Leicester Poly Fourth time seeing them but first time as a headliner. A minibus for the short trek to Leicester is arranged. Armed with a hit single, every audience is devoted. Highlights are “This night has opened my eyes” and “TCM” twice over. Red Guitars support.

Always liked “Little Arithmetics” so bought this in Oxfam today for £3. And the Van Morrison album for £4. Quietly pleased.

The Sound Leicester Poly 7/11/1982. Tiny campus venue, maybe 40 people there. Subsidised student bar, by the time the-band arrived our approval was loud. Adrian Borland kindly indulged us backstage afterwards. We were young and drunk but he could tell we genuinely loved his band. And what a band.

Wilco/The Clientele.- Leeds Academy - 03/11/09 The Clientele are new to me and their lovely wistful songs make an instant fan of me. Music to watch city life through rain streaked windows. Wilco are glorious. simultaneously tight and loose, “Bull Black Nova” sounds huge and one highlight of many.

17 years ago today at The Foundry, Sheffield Uni’. Supported by J Tillman. Possibly the last band I completely fell in love with on first hearing. It was freezing cold that night and the first time I noticed a fair few of the audience were in their sixties or older. I was 42, a mere boy.

39 years ago today. My only sighting of solo Julian in the wild. Set comprising of first 3 solo albums plus a couple of TE singles. Julian on fine form using that mic stand to great effect and with a great band backing him. Support from Primal Scream Mk 1 at the peak of their early powers.

Just been to see Gillian Welch & David Rawlings at Manchester Apollo. Spellbinding stuff. Perfect sound, flawless playing and where to start with that voice. Plus a cover of “White Rabbit” to end the show. Was not expecting that.

40 years ago today The Weather Prophets/Primal Scream/The Bodines/Meat Whiplash - Hammersmith Clarendon. One of the first WP shows? Primal Scream did 6 songs in 15 minutes. The Bodines had a clutch of fine tunes that never really made the transition to record. Meat Whiplash had “Don’t Slip Up”.

@jamesskelly.bsky.social The Coral 18.10.2007 Sheffield Octagon. In support of a great album “Roots And Echoes” and I got to hear my second favourite Coral song “Music at Night”. But most memorable in being my lad’s first concert aged 14. He loved it.

30 September 1992. Sugar at The Leadmill, Sheffield. Insanely loud from start to finish but the ferocity and intensity builds until it peaks with Tilted and JC Auto. My ears were ringing for days afterwards.

Just saw Edwyn Collins@Buxton. Incredibly joyous and moving as I listen to the soundtrack of my last 45 years. Edwyn on feisty good form and the band were superb especially guitarist Patrick Ralla who also featured in impressive support The Hanging Stars. Will investigate on Bandcamp tomorrow.

Jane Weaver at the Float Along festival at The Foundry in Sheffield tonight. Shorter greatest hits set as second billing to Antony Szmierek. Jane is also poorly but you wouldn’t know. She is ace. AS is great fun. Imagine Alex Turner fronting Underworld. Lots of positive vibes and smiling faces.

26 September 1992. Moose at The Leadmill, Sheffield. Like watching two different bands on the same stage as they veered between the early effects laden singles and the hazy country tinged pop of “XYZ”. Luckily, I loved them both.

26/27 September 1981. The Bunnymen were flawless in 1981 but special mention to The Cramps who were great fun. The original Sunday bill was supposed to include Japan, Killing Joke and Tom Verlaine. Instead, GO4 headlined and Classic Nouveaux played for what seemed like a year. Absolute shithole.

25 September 1983. Crystal clear sound on the night so Andy Gills guitar sounds more jagged than usual. The songs from “Hard” especially “Silver Lining” are 100% more vital than their insipid studio versions. Third time seeing The Smiths and best yet, seems a fair few are there solely for them.

Just realised this is 40 years old this month. My favourite Husker Du album and “Makes No Sense At All” still makes my desert island discs. I played both sides of that 7” to death in 1985.

Looking forward to seeing these two next month. Superb album

15 September 1992. Spiritualized at The Leadmill, Sheffield. Midweek gig at a less than half full Leadmill. Loud. Some people sat on the floor for their performance which I remember vexed me. “Lazer Guided Melodies” plus assorted singles. Highlight was the recent “Medication”. Best time I saw them.

11/09/1982. An ice rink carpeted over for the occasion so numb feet for everyone. Listening back to the recording, out of tune vocals and bum notes abound but to this 16 year old NO were magnificent. Hearing “AOC” and “Leave me alone” for the first time and recognising them as immediate classics.
