While we are still seeing aftershocks from the M7.0 Hubbard Glacier event on December 6th in SW Yukon, a friendly reminder that down in Victoria we also live in Earthquake Country. These events are unlikely to have been felt, as they are small and relatively deep in the crust of the upper plate.

Preliminary NLL-SC relocation of M7 Dec 6 #Alaska #Yukon Hubbard Glacier #earthquakes and seismicity since 2020. Hubbard events fall in void in earlier seismicity, show clear SE-NW trend, and suggest main rupture was ~vertical (strike-slip?) at SE and complex or dipping (toward NE??) to the NW.

Very preliminary relocation results from the December 6th #Alaska - #Yukon #earthquake, The Hubbard Glacier Earthquake. Double difference locations (343) derived from catalog epicentres (372), both manual and automatic. Squares are catalog epicentres, circles are relocations.

A shallow Magnitude ~2.5 occurred 5:41pm local time near the Canada-US border, between Langley and Abbotsford. Detected with @raspishake.bsky.social instruments across the MVRD and CRD.

The latest models from the USGS show slip, and associated strong shaking, extending much further to the south. Here I have plotted contours of estimated shaking over a map of population density. Just curious, any other seismologists out there having difficulty getting data from the @earthscope.org SAGE/GAGE fdsnws services, or are getting a "system currently overloaded" message from the web-based metadata aggregator?

The US Geological Survey (in the Dept of the Interior) is the federal agency that runs our volcano observatories & monitors volcanoes in the US for imminent eruption. Their work is critical to protect lives & infrastructure when volcanoes awaken like this. 🌋

Small Earthquake just off from Colwood this afternoon at 4:24 PM local time. A small M0.8 event at 9 km depth, but still detectable with the local seismic networks and a few of the SchoolShake stations!

Another small but felt earthquake occured March 6th at 16:18 PST, deep within the Olympic Mountains of Washington State. While a M3.8-3.9, at 42km depth it was not as widely felt as Monday's. Picked up nicely on the SchoolShake @raspishake.bsky.social Network.

Here are the waveforms from the 23:23 UTC Cayman Islands Mw7.6 that occurred earlier today. You can see the waves arrive across the SchoolShake Network Raspberry Shakes in South West BC a bit more than 8 minutes after the earthquake.

Regarding the earthquakes near the greek island of #Santorini there a few things to know. #Earthquake swarms are common throughout the aegean, and usually they end without causing problems. So there is a high likelyhood that nothing will happen. However, there are several potential issues. 1/7

If Canadian universities had a bit of vision, they would be launching a Manhattan project to poach every US-based top researcher. And the federal government would be drastically expanding tri-council funding and creating an expedited review process for those holding NSF and similar grants.

Even when you know how magnitudes work and so how big a M9 earthquake would be, it's still hard to fully fathom an event like 1700 Cascadia. The rupture area is just SO huge.

Just coming to the end of a very nice 2 week vacation to the south western Pacific islands, North Island New Zealand, Fiji and Tokoriki. No seismology on this trip, just a family getaway to visit good friends and attend another friend's wedding.

Significant Earthquake off BC, along the southernmost stretch of the Queen Charlotte Fault! It is an M6.1 event (will be revised), strike slip, south of Cape St James. Felt across a broad region. It was preceded by a foreshock (M4.2) by about 1 hr and since an M4.2 aftershock. (1/)
