Why has Fantasy (D&D/Pathfinder) survived when so many other TTRPG genres have come and gone, like Top Secret and Gamma World? IMO it is because fantasy is more reliable escapism. Espionage and post apocalyptic radioactive settings are too close to real world worries to be escapism for everyone.
