Earlier this year I learned that, in rare cases, Cedar Waxwings have wax on the tips of their tail feathers (the typical place is on the wing tips.) I was delighted to recently find another Cedar Waxwing that had a couple of red waxy tips on the tail feathers.

A pair of fritillaries (exact species unknown) have their tongues out, sampling the nectar from the spreading dogbane plant. This is on Fiva Creek FSR, high in the hills above Rock Creek, from August of last year.

A lovely interruption from writing about orchids - pre-publication copies of my new book for children have arrived. Writing this meant a lot to me. As a kid I was desperate for books full of interesting facts and cool stuff about butterflies. If this book finds a kid like me, I hope they love it.

Dead cold, dead of winter is Three-toed Woodpecker time! Out there in the frozen, silent forest-scene they softly peck off bark chips to expose insect eggs and overwintering adults. Their calm & deliberate approach match their environment.

A must-see in Philadelphia is the Dream Garden mosaic in the Curtis Building, near Independence Square. It's 49 feet wide and composed of over 100,000 pieces of lustered glass, some placed over gold leaf. Absolutely stunning. Designed by Maxfield Parrish, built by Tiffany in 1916. #philadelphia #art

Here is an Andrena bee gathering pollen from a bur oak. Pollinator insects are busy as flowering begins. Honeybees get all the attention, but we should know this: There are over 4000 species of native bees busy pollinating; and honeybees are not native to North America, but are imported livestock.

We have a few red-breasted nuthatches this winter and the yard is filled with their nasally beeps. But there is occasionally a slightly louder nasally beep and it belongs to this guy! This male White-breasted nuthatch was in today checking out the spruce trees for snacks! #Birds 🪶
