What's interesting is that MPD seem to regularly budget just $17.5 million for OT (242,000 hours), but blows through that pretty quickly. In the last fiscal year, MPD ended with 1,009,910 of OT hours on the local side alone.

Interesting: Per a new report to the D.C. Council, MPD officers have done $110 million worth of overtime so far this fiscal year (Oct. 2024 to date). Of that, $61 million was paid by the city, significantly above the $17.5 million budgeted for the entire year.

It is wild that we think 500+ residents waiting in a queue for hours to testify in a marathon session is good government. This potentially will run all day and well into the evening. With a vote Friday there is almost no way to make this easier for residents and break this into multiple sessions.

Big wins but also… There is still $0 for permanent supportive housing for individuals experiencing homelessness. This means no one, NO ONE, will start the process to receive housing until 2027, assuming it is funded then. It is an abject failure to support our unhoused neighbors.

A nice reminder of the immense power contained in saying “no.” When people refuse to comply, it raises the costs ($$$, political, social, etc) of enforcing authoritarianism. They very well might try anyway, but every person that says “no” is another point of friction.
