The AFL-CIO should start throwing some money towards labor journalism. If it was done right (i.e. with them accepting that journalists must have full editorial control over what’s published, whether or not union leaders like what they have to say) it could really have such a hugely positive impact

Chena Ridge Road is not yet included on this Fairbanks map. I know Chena Ridge was mostly homesteaded in the ’50s.

Do you know whether the road existed in 1952?

I am not going to compromise my values. I am not going to speak in platitudes or shy away from the truth. And I certainly am not going to throw immigrants or trans kids under the bus because some consultant told me it polls really well with Republicans.

In the past when I sat down to write about Israel, I’ve had a moment where I take a deep breath and accept that, as a Jewish woman, it’s going to be difficult. This time, there was no such moment. I wrote about the intentional starvation of Gaza by Israel/US, and the moral imperative to say enough:

Latest from the Memo: While it'll be months and years for us to really unpack the impact of Murkowski's vote, it's a watershed moment for the allegedly moderate, process-focused lawmaker who has been described in the Trump era as one of the few sensible adults left in the room.

Maybe it's time for Alaska’s Congressional delegation to come up with a new motto, because Ted Stevens' words, "To hell with politics. Just do what's right for Alaska," seem out of date.

It’s a terrible bill. It will literally kill people. The most vulnerable among us will suffer as the wealthiest benefit. It’s perverse. I wish there were something I could do. But alas, I am only a U.S. Senator from Alaska whose “no” vote would kill the bill. So I voted yes. You get it.

The Zohran campaign has been inspiring & is a model for us all from now on. Zohran never backed off socialist principles, but did not engage in performative ultra-leftism or scolding. Socialism is about optimism that a better world is possible, it's nice to be reminded of that.

It’s extremely noticeable that there haven’t been strikes in response to Trump’s decimation of federal unions. Those unions were built on the premise that they could exercise power without being able to strike. That’s being revealed as a big illusion.

Of course it’s illegal. That doesn’t really matter anymore unless the courts do something about it, and even then, it only matters if their orders are followed. We’re not in a new era—we’re back in an old one. These plutocrat motherfuckers need to remember that labor laws were the compromise.
