The appropriations bill that includes NIH is being finalized. The Senate bill includes a bipartisan amendment from Senators Capito (WV) and Baldwin (WI) limiting multi-year funding of grants. The House version does not and OMB has issued a veto threat if the House includes such language. 1/3

Here is the curve for new and competitive renewal (Type 1 and Type 2) awards. This reveals that only very few (42) new and competitive renewal awards have been made thus far in fiscal year 2026. This compares with more than 1200 through the same date in previous fiscal years. 3/6

I hate this with every fiber of my being. One of the primary drivers in becoming a scientist is that your brain loves coming up with ideas for experiments. If you're out of ideas go do something else and let the rest of us cook.

Reflecting on 2025—I did the most uncharacteristic thing: I read a biography (non-fiction). 40+ hours of painful details on a polarizing man who shaped U.S. domestic affairs. This book gave me a "short" U.S. history lesson that I never knew I needed. Highly recommend. FYI you will be disgusted!
