A sound long gone from British villages & gardens - a singing Wryneck. There’s Pied Flycatchers, Redstarts, Hawfinches, Tree Sparrows and Swallows around this garden too. It’s like going back in time, challenging the shifting baseline and reminding how much birds have declined in Britain.

I'm happy to agree that 'in the beginning' there was probably closed forest and a continuum to open forest, savanna/wood pasture, all in large quantities, and that they were not fixed over space or time, with some very dynamic landscapes and others on a much longer timescale (millennia).

The issue is clearly scale, in both time & space. If we have extensive wooded landscapes then there's room for the full spectrum, with dynamism on short + long spatiotemporal scales. Regular dynamic regeneration on short timescales, and old-growth forest on longer timescales. Simple! 2/2
