The reason why it is essential to read IN BULK when studying history is not simply to amass empirical knowledge—though that is important, too, of course—but because *interpretation* requires thick contextual awareness, and there is NO SHORTCUT for building that up that awareness.

I was sad to hear of the death of Carlo Ginzburg this week because, in some respects, it was through his work that I started to move beyond seeing #history as knowing 'the past' to conceptualising it as conditional, interpreted, evolving. Although that realisation came with a lot of tears. 1/

This has me absolutely beaming. The committee voted for the anonymised shortlist to select the winner & it was an incredibly hard call to make. The nominees were all so impressive; their mentees/ tutors spoke so highly of them &their historyteacher #mentoring. Helen would have been thrilled. 😍

The weather is unbelievable. Two weeks' ago temperatures of 33°C in Notts. Today, icy hail stones descending from on high.

So, the thing about being super organised and scheduling emails to be sent during the school run is that when you get back from school run you are confronted by an inbox of emails requiring actions.

So turns out my school visits didn't just leave me with a warm glow and sense that the kids are alright. They also left me with an absence of voice, much to the joy of my family this weekend. Currently praying for an overnight miracle ahead of another school visit tomorrow!

This week, we were also pleased to learn that historians perform well in a new @yougov.co.uk poll on the trustworthiness of experts bit.ly/49I9NV7 77% trust historians' expertise, placing them third in a listing of professions. This is a 6% increase on a similar poll in 2017 #Skystorians

This week I have had the privilege of visiting schools and observing history lessons in Derbyshire, NW London, 2 x East London and South Notts. In all 5 cases, students were keen to think about history. My highlight was being asked by one young man if I would be his partner for his source task! 🤩
