It's not just that new players aren't willing to look at other games; it's that they're actively hostile to doing so. In years gone by, players would feel free to just try an unfamiliar game and ask "What am I rolling?" But in the modern space, when you're unfamiliar with your 'first' game? Nah.

They legitimately made D&D too accessible for new players. I'm not saying 'gatekeep', but in previous decades the basic requirement of reading at least one book has been pushed entirely onto GMs. Players are not even willing to do that much anymore. So of COURSE they don't look at other games.
