i am going to put a finer point on this: executive orders are not laws. and they certainly are not royal decrees. they are interpretations of existing law for the purposes of enforcement. the fact that so many people are treating them as laws is actually driving me a bit insane.

Obama's '08 campaign won the biggest margin of victory in the last 30+ years. Within hours of his inauguration, Republicans went to dinner and agreed to oppose him on every single item. Two years later, they won 63 House seats and 6 Senate seats.

I am such a believer in this. Down-ballot is the way. It’s also how we build a sustainable future of good leaders and infrastructure to elect and support them, as well as the movements they represent. We don’t just need strong candidates. We need strong organizers, managers, CoS, grassroots, etc.

Dems, let’s pour energy into swing districts in non-swing states. We got so so close to taking the House. There are very few people in even the most reliably blue districts who don’t live within commuting distance of a swing district.

@semmiotic.bsky.social and I knocked on close to 600 doors for her and did not know she was a “Run for Something” alum. We’ve got 700 days before the next election. Supporting Run for Something and @contesteveryrace.bsky.social is a very efficient use of volunteer energy!

Just an observation: over the last 8 years of 3000+ Run for Something state & local candidates, the most persistent issues ppl ran on were (1) housing & (2) opioids. Other stuff obvs came up as relevant for the office/community, but those 2 were far & away the most common for the entire time.

Sometimes we think we—in the higher ed world—are marginal. We’re not.
