How I arrived on Bluesky

I am physically challenged making music due to a non functioning hand. Result of a stroke at 12yrs old. Lucky I guess. Anyway, playing keyboards has always been beyond my grasp (lol) but just picked up a Launchpad Pro mk 3 for it's chord mode. Unbelievable access! I can sort of play now. Incredible

So it's finally here. My last live gig was in a disused wind tunnel. The project attracted 100k arts funding and I was one of the lucky 24 electronic artists to get a slot. Amazing project in an amazing space. More to follow but the music is up after a year in binaural recording.

If I had to describe the experience of releasing your own music now, it’s like having a yard sale, but you live on a cul-de-sac, miles from a main road, and you publicise it by sending out a message in a bottle, and the only people who visit are friends or relatives who feel sorry for you.

Finally got a tonne of gear up on reverb and the bay (not flogging you guys!). Became quite hard nosed about the synths and kit that defined last few years. Reorganized my tiny studio by ripping out desks and making more room. Godzilla-like levels of catharsis and renewal.

Everyone has their goto sound. It's not the best place for production. If I start loading up jungle samples late at night over my project, it's time to STOP. Nothing good will come from trying to lift a 127 bpm project up to 185 bpm lol.

Spent ages explaining to a colleague how well produced intricate techno relies on polythythms and the importance of the numbers 2,3 and 7 in an 8 bar loop. His response? 'What, like Gabba?' ....sigh

With age, maturity. Do not feel the urgency of buying new kit indiscriminately. Flogging off some mistakes and some near misses to make room and cash for a more considered synth purchase.

Epic spooky chord session yesterday might evolve into an ambient thing don't know yet. Slow it down and start layering I guess. I might try the old trick of mixing into a compressor instead of adding it in later.

It's the hope that kills you, right? I'm changing jobs and was looking forward to a few weeks in-between to write some music aaaaaand... it all fell through. No break and I had built up the poss time off in my head with all the lovely things I was gonna do. Lesson learnt. Deal in facts

Some days I feel down and some days I feel positive. So I try to think of the down days as a "preparation period for positivity". The more I know about the negative, the more I can make people positive. I believe it can be conveyed through the sounds that musicians make. Even if there are no lyrics.

My last project was strictly at 90 BPM I was asked to make 4 treatments for an award winning animator to enable his students to score their turntable animations called 'phonotropes' ( example here youtu.be/to99C-0cLGE?...) looking foward to writing again at 120 - 135 BPM, my happy place.

When I'm selling gear on Reverb or Ebay I'm always compelled to put smoke and pet free studio. It's a culture thing,right? My thirty strong troupe of bong-smoking howler monkeys hate it when I have to relocate them if I'm selling a drum machine.

Much has been written and YT'd already about Digitakt. More than I can make a difference to. A lesser known fact is the 10x10 VESA holes ready for a cheap ebay monitor stand. Behold my Z of Doom. Wish more manufacturers went with VESA as I love an angled ergonomic solution.

Sooo just found out my camcorder has a hidden line in function if I want to pop a quick synth noodle up on YT. I can take a mono sum from my 12 ch desk using an old Irig2. Thanks to @shutupmrrogers.bsky.social for camcorder inspiration. Now nobody can escape my tedious dawless jams MUHAHAHA☠️☠️☠️
