This letter from @brendanjkearney.bsky.social of @walkmass.bsky.social notes that while more regulation is needed for things like e-motos, our state has not made progress on other measures that would have an even larger impact on the safety of pedestrians and micro-mobility users.

Something I often talk about is the need for media outlets to put conversations about e-bike safety and regulations in the context of the larger danger on our streets: cars. The Boston Globe published two letters to the editors that do this well. I'll thread them below.

🚲 The bike ride, organized by BCU, will set off from Cambridge Common at 11 am and bike to the State House. 🚶‍♀️ The walk, organized by WalkMassachusetts, will meet in Boston Common at 11 am before joining the rally at the State House.

This year, registrants can choose to participate in either a group bike ride or a group walk before the rally portion of the event.

On Sunday, November 16, we will gather to remember those we have lost and encourage our state legislators to pass legislation for automated enforcement and expanded truck safety requirements that will help prevent crashes that end in tragedy.

As of October 20, a total of 273 people have been killed on Massachusetts roads this year alone, including forty pedestrians and seven cyclists. These deaths are preventable, and we will not accept any loss of life on our roads.

So true! For many of us this is about protecting our residents & our constituents. It’s about putting people ahead of politics. It’s what our public servants like @steverolle.bsky.social and @toddkirrane.bsky.social & their entire staff do too. It’s about the Candice and other children.

Trees are pretty amazing bits of urban infrastructure. They’re basically the only capital asset that gets -better- after being in place for 20 years … and they’re wildly cross functional. Traffic calming, cooling, beautification, air filtering … 2/?

If you have a moment today, in the heat, and you can do it without risk to your health - take a moment to stand in the shade of a tree as opposed to the shade of a building. It’ll be perceptibly cooler under the tree because of the ‘swamp cooler’ effect from water being drawn up to the leaves. 1/?

As someone who has done one of these walk audits, I can not recommend them enough. It's so eye-opening for people to really examine how and why infrastructure is failing pedestrians and ways to address that.
