It’s wild that Americans don’t get the link between lots and lots of people having guns and lots and lots of people getting shot.

The murder of Charlie Kirk is part of a disturbing rise in political violence that threatens to hollow out our public life. A free society relies on the premise that people can speak out without fear or humiliation. No more political violence.

I'm seeing a lot of big accounts missing the mark on this story. HHS through BARDA is cancelling contracts for mRNA vaccine research related to viral respiratory illnesses. This does not affect mRNA cancer research by NIH and Moderna. It's still bad news but let's try to keep our facts straight.

There is simply not enough to say about how bad this is. Not only will we miss out on cures for infections & things like pancreatic cancer, the US will fall behind in science, tech, economy, and while other countries will take this over it will still be slowed/delayed. It’s a national security risk!

My work parters are clinicians I trust implicitly with patients, and always have my back personally, but reached potentially new heights today when one emailed the Classics professors at Fresno State to clarify a group text discussion about conjugation of an Ancient Greek word.

Los Angeles residents were outraged after dozens of federal agents marched through MacArthur Park, in one of the city’s most immigrant-heavy neighborhoods. Homeland Security officials said it was an immigration enforcement operation, though it was unclear if anyone had been arrested.

I was at that protest. We marched from Mariachi plaza. It was totally peaceful until they started lobbing tear gas and flash bangs directly into the crowd.

In the last 20 or so minutes I’ve seen LAPD officers shove women to the ground without provocation, rip a sign out of a man’s hand and then swing a baton into his leg and raise a less-lethal launcher to aim directly at a protester (which I’m 99% is a major policy violation.)

Gorgeous weekend in the backyard aka the Sierra National Forest. Truck parked next to me yesterday at a crag had a note on it that said “hey guys, I tried to join you but I got really lost on the trail and couldn’t find my way up.” Good things are hard to find I suppose. Friends help.

Kudos to this woman for speaking up and disrupting the normalization of asking citizenship status doing routine screenings at the hospital. Those of us who are US citizens all need to disrupt this normalization by refusing to answer and inquiring into why they are asking.

A retired nurse cancels her surgery at Temple Hospital after being asked about her citizenship
A Temple spokesperson, without identifying the patient by name, said she was asked about citizenship in error. It appears uncommon for healthcare providers to inquire about status.

For herd immunity against measles, 92-95% of the population must be vaccinated. As a live vaccine MMR can’t be given to pts who are immune suppressed (including pts receiving chemo/radiation or immunosuppression) And it’s not effective in newborns. So if you CAN get it, we REALLY need you to.

A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.

If a trainee came to me with an idea for a research study, I would have them do a literature review to focus the question being asked and verify the science behind it. Can’t imagine that a thoughtful student would complete that review and think this plan makes any sense.
