The genius myth is one of the least useful stories we tell about art. It makes great work look like it arrived by lightning strike instead of years of false starts, bad luck, wrong turns, stubbornness, revision, and private embarrassment. Lightning is prettier. Less true, unfortunately.

It is so odd that when confronted w a deliberately ambiguous ending, some ppl cannot or will not understand that it is *deliberate* & will go searching for an explanation, either in general or to confirm that THEIR ending is correct The mystery is the POINT, any & all are true. Isn't this enough?

I'll also say that if you nail the landing, readers will forgive a lot of the middle. If you DON'T nail the landing, it can kill the sales of an otherwise great book. It's that feeling of catharsis or satisfaction at the end that drives people to cry "Oh you must read this!" to everyone they know
