It is true that these spellings are widely considered outdated, and I'm pretty sure contemporary transphobes use them *now* specifically because they know a lot of us don't like them. But it's important not to rewrite our history.

I'm seeing claims that the spellings "transwoman" and "transman" were invented by terves. It's not true. They were common in-community terms until the mid-2010s, appearing in writings by S. Bear Bergman (2006), Susan Stryker (2008) and Dean Spade (2011). Julia Serano was an early critic in 2013.

I donโt know Alex Pretti, Iโve never met him. But everything that Iโve seen and heard about him since he was murdered by ICE cowards indicates that he was a wonderful, amazing man; someone who should be celebrated and is the type of person that we should all strive to be.

I remember in the 90s how the Nazi phrase of "Papieren bitte" (papers please) was often used as a response to things considered fascist. NO ONE in the US should EVER be required to have identification on them. Yes yes buying alcohol etc are clear exceptions; no one should ever be penalized for

When I think about how often I just did this by default, completely unthinking, it honestly takes my breath away. Like I have to sit there and really absorb it for a few seconds because it's just so much time play-acting at being something I'm not, in literally every aspect of my life.

Just boosting methodological notes on that progesterone study that everyone's super excited about. Yes, it's exciting! Yes, it's super promising! Yes, the n for each group is 15! Yes, there are some important asterisks to the work! Yes, it's findings on estrogen levels are WAY MORE IMPORTANT!

Rest in peace, Andrea Gibson. For those who haven't experienced their poetry, this is one of their most well-known pieces and one whose words and video have brought me to tears many times. "You don't want a soft death. You want a hard life that is your life."

Very much this. A gender dysphoria diagnosis is a lot like a diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy (tingly and painful fingers)--it's the result of something else: being forced to live as someone we're not. That's inherently traumatic. And treating symptoms will never resolve either condition.

yes! please read the whole thing! It's a great character arc to read, and full of great little unexpected details. I already knew a bit about trans stuff so the more obvious bits didn't land but the panel about "you don't identify with yourself" hit like a brick to the head.

I just figure: 1. older term from a pretty particular cultural context (African American Ballroom scene) 2. therefore in-group in intent and implications 3. out of context becomes very hit or miss because all that is lost 4. implications become a free for all the more people use it based on vibes.

yeah. the fact some people don't want or can't access hrt and are still trans and correctly their gender, doesn't mean wanting hrt (or other medical interventions) is "transphobic" or misogynistic or assimilationist.

I think about this image a lot. This is an image from the Aurat March (Women's March) in Karachi, Pakistan, on International Women's Day 2018. The women in the picture are Pakistani trans women, aka khwaja siras or hijras; one is a friend of a close friend of mine.

yup. Once we're at the final election, your responsibility is to look at which platform reduces damage, at the least. We're all stuck in this system together; your conscience is irrelevant; if both candidates support something, then you have no control over that. Vote for the pieces you can affect.

I've been EXTREMELY uncomfortable with how trans women being forced to use the men's room is (rightfully) portrayed as a tragedy... while trans men being forced into the women's is played as a comedy. "Haha, you want THIS guy to use the ladies room?" As if that guy isn't in major danger.
