Met with one of my international doctoral students today, close to finishing a really interesting dissertation, and they have decided not to apply to any academic positions inside the US after finishing. Not unexpected, just a sad reflection of our national self-sabotage.

Driving north through the desert in Nevada we stopped to pee and explore a ghost town and found a microcosm of American culture wars playing out in an abandoned cement factory building. I took some photos. The star: a charred teddy bear wearing an American flag sweater we named Roosevelt.

It's been just under a year and we totally flipped around how we make money. Last year, The Onion subsisted on revenue from One Weird Trick ads. We turned that off and started making a newspaper. Now, well over twice as many people get The Onion in the mail than there are people at the Knicks game.

A reminder that NSF is explicitly breaking the law if/when they attempt to cancel grants that focus on promoting participation in science by underrepresented groups on that basis, incl women in science programs like NSF ADVANCE. Congress expressly directs the NSF to grant funds for this purpose. 🧪

1. The DOJ has sent threatening letters to several medical journals, focused around whether these journals are spreading misinformation that harms the American people and suppressing alternative viewpoints. I study how the norms and institutions of science facilitate discovery and self-correction.
