So sad to hear about the death of Japanese experimental filmmaker Shozin Fukui on April 2nd. We visited his wife just a couple of weeks ago at their bar in Higashi-Nakano and learned he wasn’t doing so well. He died just as the world was releasing and recognising his contribution to cinema.

Interviewed Leigh Lawson today for an as yet unannounced blu. He has an impeccable memory considering he’s 80 years old now. He’s in two of my favourite films and he brought me a copy of his latest poetry book!

I was talking to a dude from Criterion at a party the other night who described the blu industry as “bottom of the pecking order”, and after editing yet another filmed interview where the interviewee says “do people still watch dvds?” I can’t stop thinking about how sad that is.

This Iron Lung rhetoric is weird. Like, I’m happy for them, but the idea they’re pushing it as “how an indie film broke the box office”.. it was still on a $3m budget, by most indie standards that’s a pretty good budget for a horror movie. Blumhouse only spend $3-5m on their movies…

Just watched Wim Wenders Perfect Days (2023) on mubi and it was lovely. Such a sweet film about the joys and hardships of a simple life in Tokyo. Koji Yakusho was a brilliant almost silent protagonist.
