I don’t know anyone working in tech who doesn’t have a story about having to go around official processes to get something done. Condition 1 from the OP holds in almost all cases. If you haven’t, I guess congrats on only working at perfect workplaces in your career? But it’s not a bad thing to do.

But no one person or detector is accurate. You should not rely on AI detection or you will falsely accuse people!

One thing that's surprised me about the AI discourse is how attached people are to work email specifically as a mode of communication

I think this is an apt analogy for education. At the same time, in the working world people use forklifts all the time and it’s not considered “cheating”, and they have replaced labor that was previously done by strong people lifting stuff. Our views on AI need to contend with this reality.

I have a whole presentation on this, but the poster here commits the fallacy of claiming that all “production” software has the same level of risk. The average person understands that the consequences of a mistake in machine translation are far less than a breathing device failing.

People don’t want to hear this but everything you read, whether it comes from a human or a computer system, has a probability of being false. Books and newspapers print errata all the time! Nobody in the humanities should be basing an argument on the idea that the human-written word is always true.
