Last year Harrell cut the City's tenant services by 40%, and those cuts remain in this new proposed budget. While I'm happy to see more rental assistance, tenant services are important to fully fund, especially with more than 50% of the city being renters.

This kind of rhetoric sure hits differently during Trump's second administration, something these councilmembers don't appear particularly attuned to. Saying you'll fight against the Trump administration while attacking the equitable development initiative is some real cognitive dissonance.

Listening to public comment this morning before the B&O tax vote, and I'm really struck by how many people are working and volunteering in our city to help people and make it a better place.

Tax exemptions are not neutral, despite the way this council just passed them with virtually no discussion, and only a week after they were proposed. It's disingenuous to pretend they are, while simultaneously carping that a tax increase to offset those cuts should require weeks of discusison.

Post updated this morning with an email from Cathy Moore, who resigned from the council, to Councilmember Mark Solomon, trying to influence him not to move forward with renters' commission appointments that she preventing from moving forward for her entire 18-month term.

"The two committee members boycotting Wednesday’s meeting also delayed a vote on accepting $30.7 million in federal grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Much of this was housing awards."

“It is councilmembers’ chartered responsibility to be at these meetings,” Rinck said. “This is literally our job. So I find it deeply frustrating that people took time to leave their jobs in the middle of the day, yet not every member of this committee could show up to do theirs.”

Giving money to Moreland, rather than long-established groups that have worked with women on Aurora for years, is the equivalent of taking away money from the Downtown Emergency Service Center and giving it to We Heart Seattle. It's a strong ideological choice to abandon evidence-based solutions.

The question for the council is not "is it good to help exploited women" but who should receive limited dollars. In this case, long-established Seattle-based groups that are located on and around Aurora and know these women were passed over Moreland to take women from Seattle to Renton.
