i was on the ground today with our team and @mulchy.bsky.social and @djbyrnes1.bsky.social. being in a situation where feds are unafraid to shoot pepper balls and tear gas at protestors AND elected officials AND the media… we are in truly scary times. and it’s only the beginning.

federal agents are getting increasingly violent as the morning goes on and the crowd of protesters outside the broadview ice facility grows. i’ve seen multiple people pushed and thrown to the ground. dhs is now playing a dispersal order warning of arrests and the use of chemical munitions.

at least twice now, this federal agent has come out of the broadview ice facility with his sidearm drawn. last friday, an ice agent shot and killed a man during a traffic stop nearby in franklin park, illinois.

Chicago police prefer liquids to gas, because the latter is indiscriminate, results in lots of collateral damage, including friendly-fire strikes. ICE don’t care.

ICE has been sidestepping some of the city's most organized resistance. They're learning, and they are also wearing people out. Meanwhile, conservatives will cover their attacks on Chicagoland as successful operations in Chicago, while a lot of liberals (who don't live here) insist the city is fine.

Poor suburban areas in Chicagoland often lack the organizing infrastructure that exists inside the city. So locals are under-resourced, and people from other areas are on the move constantly trying to document and assist.

Amid these ICE raids, something folks should understand about the Chicago suburbs is that a lot of stereotypes about the era of white flight from the city do not apply. A lot of these folks were priced out of Chicago and many commute to work here. They are part of the same social fabric.

I think there's this idea that since the national guard didn't show up, everything's OK. It's really not! ICE is spreading out over suburbs with large Latino populations and terrorizing them. It's really, really bad in lots of towns people forget about because they don't have money. It's bad.

The harm caused by general assumptions that ICE would stop targeting people as the National Guard is moved to and fro is doing severe damage to people's understanding of the situation.

In Fall 2014, soon after moving to Chicago, I read a brief article about a teen who was shot by police. It said he’d lunged at then with a knife. That was Laquan Mcdonald. A year later, we learned what had really happened. Now I approach initial police accounts accordingly.

ICE just released their official statement. A man is dead. DHS claims an officer was seriously injured. Some details in their statement do not align with what we've learned here from eyewitnesses, who also provided photo and video evidence to us. We'll say more when possible.

Happening now: it's a tense scene at the Broadview ICE processing facility outside Chicago this morning where a large protest is planned. ICE operations continue to ramp up across the city and burbs. Ten Chicago SRT agents out here with pepper ball dispensers, one long gun.

Another ICE agent has arrived for work. One masked agent inside the unmarked car. No detainees. Protesters and clergy immediately move into the driveway. Broadview police move in and are asking people to move out of the way.

The Mayor of Broadview issued a statement yesterday highlighting the village's plan to deal with the impending ICE surge. The processing/de facto detention center will operate *7 days a week for ~45 days.* Also notes potential for "assaults on law enforcement," coordination with local police.
