Had a piece on Israel/Palestine that was due to be published today postponed because of Iran/Israel war— which was the right editorial call but symbolic of how this new war is (likely intentionally) shifting global attention away from the horrific conditions of ongoing war and starvation in Gaza.

If Israel’s playbook is any prediction: they will soon be denying the death toll from their unprovoked strikes on Iran. That death toll is in the hundreds, including dozens of women and children. (And by the way Iranian *men* deserve life and grief and mourning too.)

Increasingly unpopular opinion: Israel does not want regime change. Those who think so should explain why Israel didn’t even *try* to go after the supreme leader. They want a hardliner state who tries to retaliate and make Israel the victim, but fails to inflict much damage.

My only disagreement: it’s never been about regime change. Israel kept Khamenei intact intentionally, bc that guaranteed Iran would respond. Israel needs the regime as is to keep pretending it’s under existential threat, while it knows well the issued threats are mere propaganda.
