I’ve been thinking lots recently about the concept of ‘monumentality’ in #Etruscan necropoleis & its impact on multi-sensory experiences, or rather, the multi-sensory experiences that contribute towards the perception of ‘monumentality’.

Very sad to hear of the death of John Barrett, my undergrad dissertation supervisor and the man who made me fall passionately in love with archaeological theory. As others from my year at Sheffield have been reflecting his teaching was inspiring and life changing 1/3

I didn’t see the winning paper but I can definitely say Sam’s was excellent - one to watch for the future

Saddened to hear of the death of Mark Leone. He was a giant figure in historical archaeology; his work set an intellectual horizon for the field. I can't think of anyone who thought more deeply and profoundly about the archaeology of capitalism. He was also a kind and generous mentor to me.

I mean given that she won the TAG prize and is the ultimate antidote to the claims made in the Antiquity Lecture it has to be @rachelcrellin.bsky.social ‘s Change and Archaeology!

This is a really interesting question, because it raises all kinds of questions. When does research start? What kind of time is involved? A few years ago I got invited to write a paper for a journal, cooked up the abstract in about five minutes and then forgot about it until it was nearly due 1/

Sad to hear of Renfrew’s death. Although I worked in Cambridge for a couple of years the only time I spoke to him was at a TAG wine reception. “I’ve got one piece of advice for you, my boy” he remarked “at these events drink early & often you never know when the wine will run out”. Words to live by!
