Numbers without context are no better than lies. Where I teach at UMass I’ve had to lower the enrollment on a Gen Ed Art History class I teach bc there wasn’t an available classroom with appropriate AV that seats over 60 students. That class easily enrolls 200 usually and is a feeder for our major.

As someone who comes from an underfunded public high school in south AL, I think a lot about how inequities in higher ed reproduce themselves. Nobody in my family knew that if I wanted to get a PhD and have a shot at a GREAT faculty job, I would need to go to a highly ranked SLAC or elite university
