When a president sends troops into American cities to ārestore order,ā what heās really doing is testing obedience. Portland and Chicago arenāt war zonesā¦theyāre warning shots. Authoritarians donāt announce takeovers. They practice them. One city at a time. However, each practice destroys families.

The jaggedness of AI remains even as models have rapidly come to exceed human abilities in many of the hardest timed math & science contests. Yet there is much less progress on good puns. True AGI would be figure out our limits in more than calculus (sorry, but also seriously).

Kroger will lay off ~1,000 employees. In December, it announced $7.5B in stock buybacks ā which juice stock prices, enriching shareholders and boosting CEO pay. Just so happens that Kroger's last CEO was paid 457x its typical employee in 2024. Textbook corporate greed.

One of the things I have come to appreciate is that a good deal of Rome's success came from the fact that, as rapacious and opportunistic and bellicose as they could be, they mostly avoided giving unnecessary insult to their allies. A virtue rare in antiquity as today; we used to be good at it.
