My daughter's school in an immigrant-heavy neighborhood held an open meeting for parents with the principal + staff about ICE. My god. The things some of these parents were sharing, and worst of all, the things 5- and 6-year olds are saying that no kid should have to worry about. Infuriating.

My most immediate reaction to this is that "partnership over preemption" is an absolutely false binary, and one clearly being promoted by the Municipal League here as cover for their policy stance against statewide zoning reform.

My 4 year old: "Dad I had a great idea!!! What if all the stuff in our house was all upstairs! And the downstairs... was a whole grocery store!" Kid just invented mixed-use buildings. He gets it.

Watching more than 100 clergy and faith leaders demanding peace, and justice, demanding that ICE needs to leave our state. Knowing there's hundreds of Minnesotans out on patrol right now, protecting neighbors. It's bad here but there's also so much good, man.

If the Department of Homeland Security were a person, it wouldn't be old enough to rent a car yet. It should be dismantled at the first opportunity.

They want a fight. They behave like they want a fight. This is the entire administration's MO, not just ICE's — everything they do is meant to provoke a crisis (or the sense of one) because a crisis is the pretext fascists need to consolidate power. It's only going to get worse before the midterms.

And also, if you DO have the energy today go get out there: Go walk around the schools, immigrant businesses, and bus stops with your neighbors. Prevent ICE from escalating this. Prevent fascists from escalating this.

A thing I struggle to communicate concisely is that the "time tax" is mitigated by arranging your life differently, and those choices can be really rewarding. Most habitual drivers envision car-lite living as making all the same trips at the same times, just without the car. That sounds terrible!

More people should understand that this is standard practice in American urban planning. The zoning on paper is not a real plan for growth, it's the opening bid in a highly politicized negotiation between home builders, elected officials, and activists with the power to kill projects.

I watched a CNU session in 2023 where Peter Calthorpe pitched this kind of "grand boulevard" vision—and explicitly said it wasn't worth the political fight to upzone single-family neighborhoods when you could redevlop 40 miles of El Camino Real with 5-over-1's. Just a totally misguided approach.
