For today's article, I'm just griping about why "fun" is a bad word for critics.

There’s one word I try to never use when writing about board games. The F-word. No, not that one. “Fun.” There it is. My critical curse word. Today I want to talk about why “fun” isn’t an especiall…

VERY SHORTLY i'll be live on twitch to RANK EVERY SINGLE SECRET LAIR WOTC HAS EVER MADE and settle once and for all the question "precisely how many good Secret Lairs do you need to make in order to amend for the sin of making one dedicated to Dwight Schrute?"

As always, the best part of the new YGO announcement is all the pendulum players crying about it. The fact that there's going to be dedicated Genesys YCSes is the one unbelievable bit of the whole announcement, that's a bet I definitely would have lost. Curious to see how this goes.

I can't really speak to it cause, y'know, don't play the game, but "Maxx C being legal is why we (OCG players) did so bad at Worlds" really sounds like cope to me

the fact that we dont talk about games like arcs and root when talking about artistic/thematic/political expression in tabletop games points to a fundamental weakness of rpg-centered games discourse

I cannot be the only one that thinks that, in regards to Hungry Burger, Rush Duel doing "what if FRIES was EVILLL" is mind-numbingly boring, and the regular game doing "what if Burger was the crown jewel of a haute cuisine french restaurant" is genuinely an amazing bit

One thing I really like is when games have these random cards that work unlike any other card in the game. Even if the actual in-play effect isn't that strange, I love that for one reason or another these weirdos exist. This is now engagement bait, post your favorite unique one-off.

Superman got me in a comic book mood, been rereading TDKR. Do you think that in this sequence panels 5&6 are separated to foreshadow that the Joker is going to meddle with Two-Face or if it's just that Frank Miller got a bit too hyped about the 4x4 structure for a minute and didn't wanna break it

I was trying to do some research in prep for Nolan's Odyssey next year, but this profile of Ulysses was just 700 pages about the sublime agony of being, the inherent fallibility of perception, and the tyranny of the British. Also my epub seems to be corrupted, a lot of punctuation is missing.

A thing I really like is when someone asks a question like "What's the highest amount of damage you can deal in Magic using only X cards?", and half the comments are like "I dealt 10000 damage in a turn once, it'll be hard to top that!" and the other's like "Do you know how to read arrow notation?"

The difference between a good artist and a good scientist is that the former should seek to prove themselves right and the latter should seek to prove themselves wrong. This is why philosophers are scientists and mathematicians are artists.

I think that if in 2025 you spend any time at all complaining about those nasty reddit atheists being such assholes you have lost the plot. That's not someone I could ever consider an ally, but it's especially spineless if they are also an atheist.

I cannot play Amulet Titan on Arena, and conservative estimates tell me that I won't be able to do that for like 5 more years. This is like a pale shadow on the wall of Plato's cave. It's still hitting the spot. God thank you for Lumra.

Sometimes people are like "If Konami wants to sells more packs they should make draftable sets", and I think that they are really failing to appreciate that if Konami decided to adopt Set Rotation tomorrow it would be a massively less disruptive change to the way they design sets than draft would be

So, on paper Gemini monsters have an absurd value proposition. The idea is that you are trading tempo for power, you manage to develop a monster over 2 turns and you get something really good, except most gemini monsters have such underwhelming stats and effects they'd suck even as regular monsters.

Two articles that everyone should read, especially if they don't care for math. Both pdfs are trivially easy to google. The first is the most melodramatic thing ever, love it for that, and it's about Art. The second has more humor, and it's about getting better at not getting frazzled by numbers

People love to harp on media literacy being dead. I don't know if it's true, it's likely bad that it's not a skill as widespread as it ought to be. But I'm also worried about (what I perceive to be) similarly widespread innumeracy. At least people have gotten the memo that being "media illiterate" -

A funny thing about playing Elestrals is that the theme is saying "this is a game about having epic adventures and exciting fights with these cool creatures" while the actual experience of playing it is closer to "you are chained to the bottom of a well, and it just started to rain"

the difference between magic players and yugioh players is that magic players think that every other game is just magic but worse, and yugioh players think that you can't compare yugioh with other games in the first place because it's the most unique specialest little birthday boy game in the world

I think that a fun corollary of my take that "Games are the art form where players are the main characters" is "Backseating is incoherent behavior". When you watch someone else play a game the story you are experiencing isn't the story of the game, you are witness to another person living through

I've long held onto "Given two games that produce roughly equivalent experiences, we should prefer the simpler system" as a general truism, but maybe it's time to re-evaluate it. Or rather, maybe it's just definitionally impossible for two systems to 1) have drastically different levels of

Siberian's Adventures in Dominionology continue. This is Siren. Its restriction has a tendency to be cheesed. It also has a tendency to make it completely impossible to guess whether any other card can cheese it or not. I show you 3 cards, of which only one actually gets around it. Dare to guess?

I'd recommend the Resleevables podcast even to people that don't care about mtg 'cause it's just that good, but this episode in particular was great. I'll be thinking about the segment that goes from 37:30 to 50:00 about the Homelands/Prophecy comparison for a while.

there's a sense in which the Time Wizard change was a complete no brainer, what are you even doing, why did it take this long, and another sense in which it's the most baffling decision a card game company has made since wotc printed that 30th anniversary proxy set. much to think about for sure
