think virtue is a thing cultivated on multiple levels and the complete abdication of virtue by a segment of the elite, along with their reshaping political institutions around this fact, has produced a feedback loop.

Mead was my favorite IR scholar as an undergrad, and someone I deeply respected in my early 20s. Like other self-described "Realists," he ended up twisting himself in knots trying to remain edgy & relevant. In his case, he increasingly embraced the Post-Liberal mantra and became a Trump sanewasher.

People talking up Nuremberg as though it was some incredible moment of consequences for the Nazi Party, but when all was said and done, fewer than a thousand Nazis were put to death, and the governments of both Germanies were filled with them, especially in the west. Hardly a grand victory.

I think something that has become quite urgent is a reinvigoration of free speech law that aims to establish the ability to regulate outright falsehoods while protecting *political* speech. I think this is in keeping with the purpose and history of the first amendment but not its modern practice.
